About this month’s action item:

WE ARE ON THE EDGE OF SURVIVAL!

In the last ITAC Climate Collective Newsletter, we showed how we are on the edge of survival, as humanity and as a planet, when we went through the FINAL WARNING that was delivered by scientists from across the globe.

April is known as the Earth’s Month, in Brazil we also celebrate it as indigenous peoples month, as we believe this represents a lot on how the matters are inter-connected. But being a Socioenvironmental Defender, especially in Latin America, is like living constantly under attack.

According to the Front Line Defenders’ Global Analysis of 2022, a report launched by frontlinedefenders.org that reviews the situation of human rights defenders at risk around the world, Latin America continues to be the region that concentrated the biggest number of attacks on socioenvironmental defenders. Putting all of our work and survival at constant risk. But, despite the assaults on human rights and the rule of law in many countries, human and environmental rights defenders showed remarkable courage and persistence in advocating for more democratic, just and inclusive societies, which should be celebrated and always remembered.

WHAT IS THE ESCAZU AGREEMENT?

The Escazu Agreement is a Regional Agreement in regard to Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Socioenvironmental Justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. It was adopted in 2018, at a Regional Summit, but the treaty only came into effect in 2021 and now it is in the implementation phase. We have not yet reached the total ratification of the Nations in the LAC Region, that’s why there are a lot of campaigns pressioning governments and authorities to do it. If you wanna join the campaigns, post #EscazúAhora or #EscazúNOW in your social medias in support.

It is an important treaty because it seeks to reinforce socioenvironmental protection, for which it does: (i) strengthens the citizen's right to access socioenvironmental information and establishes proactive duties of the authorities to provide that information; (ii) promotes citizen participation, strengthening democracy; (iii) improves access to justice in socioenvironmental matters, and (iv) especially protects socioenvironmental defenders, who are in serious danger in several countries. So, the ratification of the Escazú Agreement will send a powerful message to socioenvironmental leaders that the threats against them matter to Authorities, matter to Congress and matter to our entire global community.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

From the 19th to the 21st of April, it was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the 2nd meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Escazú Agreement (COP 2). The main objective of the meeting is the election of the first members of the Committee to Support the Implementation and Compliance of the Treaty.
