ITAC Climate Collective, May Newsletter

On April 28th 15 GMT the Climate Collective had Abner Delina presenting BLACK CANVAS, and it was AMAZING! BLACK CANVAS IS a multi-arts collective empowering marginalized communities, nurturing care culture, global justice, and ecological healing.

This month, Pawel Pokutycki presented the results and process behind some playful artistic interventions based on the innovative use of interactive media such as 3D, VR/AR/XR, and creative coding in an educational setting. In these interventions, the students of 4 secondary schools worked collaboratively to create 3D animations and live visuals transforming the urban space of the Hague into imagined future scenarios.

THERE IS NO LIFE WITHOUT THE OCEANS!

The United Nations has declared 2021-2030 as the Ocean Decade. A campaign that aims to unite partners around ten Ocean Decade Challenges into common ocean science priorities related to knowledge gaps, essential infrastructure, capacity development, and behavior change.

10 Years. 10 Challenges. 1 Ocean. These Actions - taking the form of programs, projects, activities or contributions - will be implemented throughout the Decade to collectively create the Ocean We Want and help achieve the 2030 Agenda and related global policy frameworks.

In the last 30 years, shark populations have decreased by 80%. The IUCN lists at least two thirds of sharks as vulnerable or threatened. Sharks are the Doctors of the Sea and they are fundamental to ensure a healthy ecosystem. Unfortunately, due to maritime exploitation, pollution and hunting, they are endangered and at risk of extinction.

Although some authorities have declared a ban on the transport of shark fins, many airlines continue to transport them. Banning the transport of fins in air cargo is an important step in shark conservation. Once the sharks' fins are separated from their carcass, it becomes much harder to identify the species and confirm whether these fins belong to an endangered or CITES protected species. In this sense, it is difficult to monitor and verify whether the fins were harvested illegally, for which trade and transport must be prohibited.

The campaign

#FlyWithoutFins was created by the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, in partnership with other organizations. #FlyWithoutFins aims to alert the increased legal and reputational risks associated with the transport of shark, and so, to encourage different airline companies to stop transporting sharks, their fins, meat, skin, etc. The campaign puts pressure on companies to publicly declare that the airline will no longer carry shark fin as cargo.
